JUTE-Birth Pangs of IJO
Birth Pangs of IJO JUDGING by the usual run-ups to international commodity agreements, the flaps that marked the three-day meeting of jute producing countries in Calcutta on April 13-15 could not be regarded as extraordinary. The talks were supposed to finalise the stand that these countries would pre- eat at the proposed producer-consumer meet at Geneva on May 11-22, but that objective remained unrealised. Sources close to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), which is sponsoring the move to evolve an accord on jute, hope that another meeting, now to be hurriedly convened before the Geneva parleys, will be able to clinch the issue.
