WEST BENGAL Politics of Food Supplies THE slanging match that has now started between West Bengal's Left Front government and the Centre over food supplies to the state should not come as a surprise. Such a turn of events has been on the cards for quite some time, and now the crystal-gazers have been vindicated. And true to the Indian tradition, the debate is being held in a somewhat rarefied atmosphere of arid statistics of demand and supply, far removed from the simple but basic questions of whether the people have enough to eat, whether the minimal needs are being met or whether the nation's resources are being optimally utilised.
