in prices, which had shown signs of a let-up in the latter half of March, the Union government made larger allocations of sugar and edible oils for public distribution and claimed to have made available railway wagons for transport of commodities in short supply from producing points to consuming centres. The government also went through the motions of tightening restrictions on stock holdings and threatening traders with dire consequences if they failed to comply with the regulations. Despite these measures, wholesale prices ruled firm in April.
