state assembly introduced five days later his own bill entitled Meghalaya (Extension and Application of the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation) Inner Line Bill, a piece of legislation, corresponding to the one operative in Naga- land, for instance, entry into which is regulated by an inner line permit. Both these measures are now before select committees of the House, whose reports are expected by the end of this month. In order to further emphasise the necessity and urgency of such legislation, the opposition leader in the state assembly moved a resolution early this month (unanimously adopted) urging the state government to immediately introduce suitable legislation on the lines of the still pending residential permit bill of 1973, Almost without any dissent, both the government and the opposition in the state's politics now favour fairly severe restrictions to be placed on the entry, residence, and activities of non-indigenous people in the state.
