November 3, 1979 ERITREA New Symbol of Struggle for Liberation "TODAY, yes, it's the grasshoppers that dare stand up to the elephants," These words were uttered by Ho Chi Minh nearly thirty years ago. They described the heroic independence struggle of the Vietnamese people against colonial domination. The balance of material forces, so Ho Chi Minh admitted, was very uneven, "against enemy planes and artillery we have only bamboo spears". Yet the elephant was bound to be de. feated in the end, since the resistance- fighters placed their frill trust in "the strength and morale of the masses".
