New Technology for Cars Hansavivek HINDUSTAN MOTORS has submitted a plan to the Central government for rehabilitation of its passenger car plant which is more than 30 years old. Total capital outlay envisaged on the plan is over Rs 16 crores. Government has approved import of required machinery, subject to the company obtaining necessary loans from financial institutions. The company has already applied for loans. According to the management, this plan will enable HM to modernise its car production facilities and introduce models incorporating the latest technological advances made in engine efficiency, fuel eco- my, performance, body styling and passenger comfort. Meanwhile, the company is awaiting government permission to manufacture diesel cars on a regular basis. It was permitted to manufacture 300 units of such cars on a trial basis. These cars have proved successful on the road. Government has approved the company's application for manufacture of hydraulic excavators and steps are being taken to arrange technical collaboration with Mannesmann Dem- ag Baumaschinen of West Germany. While these developments augur well for the company's future, production at Hind Motor plant in the current year has been disrupted from the very beginning due to "unprecedented cuts" in power supply and continuous labour trouble in various forms
