Behind the Political Posturings Romesh Thapar ANYTHING can happen between now and the voting in Parliament on August 20. The Janata party, despite the public bombast, is still trying to evolve formulas for a reunification with the Janata (S). Within the Congress allied to Charan Singh, various frustrations over ministerial appointments could make for splits. The only consistently opportunist factor is the Congress (I), manoeuvring to somehow trade votes for retractions on the trials connected with the crimes of the Emergency. Of course, it's pretty certain that Indira Gandhi and company vote for Charan Singh's eighty odd rather than Jagjivan Ham's two hundred. The alarums, and the lady's difficult-to-get posture, are a smokescreen for squalid bargaining.
