 CONGRESS PARTY Point to Chavan THE decision of the Congress Workittg Committee to call off unity efforts with the Congress (I) was the second of its kind; the first time such a decision was taken to break the 'working unity' with the Congress (I) was in August last when Y B Chavan was the acting president of the Congress (Swaran Singh was abroad). This was done after Chavan's protege, Sharad Pawar, leading a group of 40 Congress legislators, defected from the Congress, brought down the Congress-Congress (I) coalition in Maharashtra, and formed a coalition government with the Janata party and other political parties the state.
