Left Academicians and Writing of Indian History APROPOS Sumanta Banerjee's letter (June 10), nobody has denied him the right to question the views of eminent historians like Susobhan Sarkar and R P Dutt. What was questioned by Bipan Chandra (May 6) was Banerjee's competence to do so, competence that is acquired not necessarily with a doctorate in the subject, nor with the mere assertion of the right to be an incono- clast but with a little familiarity and understanding of the works of the icons one is seeking to demolish.
