That resignation itself was the result of developments during the week that followed the two-day handwringing session of the national executive of the party (April 21-22) which, after "free and frank" discussions, gave a call to all members of the party, particularly the leaders, to refrain from public airing of differences. But this call for restraint and unity was, surprisingly, followed the very next day by a call to the Haryana Chief Minister to seek a vote of confidence from the legislature Janata party, a directive which the party high command Sid not even pretend to conceal was directed against Charan Singh. It was against these developments that Charan Singh had resigned from all party posts on April 29.
