ped as low as 1.29 lakh tonnes and, fearing a developing shortage, the government took a decision to import aluminium, though the idea was later abandoned. And the output of 1.59 lakh tonnes in 1975 actually produced a glut obliging New Delhi to lift the ban on exports. Production in the first six months of 1976-77 at 1.06 lakh was about 29 per cent hgher than that in the corresponding period of 1975-76. But power cuts have affected production in recent months. At present there is a 50 per cent power cut on Indian Aluminium's Hirakud smelter in Orissa. Madras Aluminium and INDAL in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, respectively, are also experiencing power shortages.
