ON January 3, 1977, the minister of state for home affairs, Om Mehta, was saying that reports appearing in sections of the Press about "elections being held in March this year" were purely speculative ,and without any basis. Ex- actly two weeks after the 'denial' by Om Mehta has come the prime minister's broadcast announcing that elections to the Lok Sabha, were after all going to be held, and held in March this year. The opposition has not been given any more time than was unavoidably necessary to prepare itself for the elections.
