existing news agencies terminating the All India Radio's subscription for their services. Dependent as they were on this indirect subsidy from the government, the agencies faced closure. Samachar was registered with the obvious intention of forcing the merger of the four existing agencies, viz, Press Trust of India, United News of India, Hindustan Samachar, and Samachar Bharati. The Board of Directors of these four organisations are supposed to have voluntarily opted for suspension of their respective news service operations and Samachar is supposed to have stepped in to fill the void. On February I , 1976, the Samachar logo began appearing in newspapers. On April 2, 1976, the four wire services were formally integrated to constitute the Samachar service, with an English division and a Hindi division. Two months later, all the offices of the four agencies were integrated everywhere.
