US and China-Nixon Rides Again

RICHARD NIXON's has been the most recalcitrant of political corpses. He seems to be back again, this time as a self-appointed roving ambassador, He is due to visit China later this month, to celebrate the fourth anniversary of his 'historic' journey of 1972. There has been intense speculation regarding the reasons that might have prompted the Chinese leaders to invite him, though in all likelihood Nixon might have invited himself to Peking. The most widely- held belief is that in inviting Nixon at this time, during an American presidential election year, the Chinese are clearly trying to indicate to the Americans that the policy of Sino- American 'understanding' arrived at during the 1972 visit continues to be cherished by the Chinese leadership; that they would want the new American president to continue to adhere to a path of trying to further the 'normalisation' process. It is also believed that the welcome given to Nixon will show, by implication, that the Chinese want any future American president to continue to present a tough, anti-Soviet stance.
