workers came to protect one of the Ambade bastis. By November 7 nine mines had stopped. The district authorities thereupon called the workers' representatives for negotiations. In these negotiations, along with local workers, S K Sanyal, president, IMWF (AITUC), also participated. Even as negotiations were going on, the strike spread and on November 9, 14 mines, with more than 15,000 workers, had stopped working and the few mines remaining were on the verge of closure. The authorities then gave in to the workers' demands
