Hamals give a contract to the society, and the society pays the hamals. At one time, there used to be private contractors. They not only paid less, but there was no security of jobs as the contractor changed every year. A new contractor would appoint his own men, and many of the old hamals would be removed, Under the present system, job security is greater and we also get more money in hand." In the next godown the work of filling sacks, weighing, stitching and stacking goes on like clockwork. Everyone is working in rhythm. No one has time to look at us.
