Soviet Union- Harsh Winter for Brezhnev

December 13, 1975 bole. The fact was and still is that weeks that 'change the world' are not spent in Asia. Summit exercises which materially affect the world are conducted elsewhere. The Americans, in their self-generated excitement which everybody else naturally shared, forgot that the. problems they want to settle in and with Peking are minor, bilateral ones and certainly not of the kind which would change the world. A retreating America was then trying to make its retreat a little less dishonourable perhaps. At most, Nixon was achieving a spectacular cover-up for the utterly unspectacular US defeat in Indochira. The Chinese want to talk business with the Americans. The Americans simply cannot afford to do that. That in short is the Sino-American dilemma. The talks will continue. The new President who takes over in January 1977 will also want to make a pilgrimage to the Middle Kingdom but that will still not sort out the problems of Sino- American relations.
