The governments of Egypt and Israel have both initialled the preliminary accord over Sinai. This is the first piece of parchment an Arab government has consented to sign along with the Israelis; the agreement could be interpreted as constituting Egypt's formal recognition of the Jewish polity. From this point of view, the agreement does certainly constitute a milestone, and the American Secretary of State can claim legitimate pride for bringing about this coup at the negotiating table.
