GUJARAT Losers All THE occasion of the Sardar Patel birth centenary provided politicians and parties in Gujarat with the opportunity to revive their electoral activities. Each of the parties is, however, moving very cautiously because the political situation is extremely fluid. To a great extent, the uncertainties that face the political parties stem from the fact that during the anti-price rise, anti-corruption mass movement led by the Nav Nirman Samiti, all the established political parties had been caught napping by the sudden outburst of popular anger. Moreover, throughout the movement none of the political parties had been able to assume the leadership of the Nav Nirman Samiti which had organised the mass upsurge. At the same time, the middle class youth who constituted the Nav Nirman Samiti lacked a political programme to keep the movement going. As a result, they too disappeared from the scene soon after the assembly was dissolved. The result has been a political vacuum.
