NEW DELHI Not High Prices, but Low Purchasing Power! JAGJIVAN RAM began his stewardship of the Food and Agriculture Ministry by proclaiming the aim of self-sufficiency and rejecting the idea of any kind of dependence on food assistance from abroad. He asserted that there was enough stock of food grains in the country and that all that had to be done was to bring it to the market and bring down prices. At the same time, he enthusiastically took over the crash programme for rabi production which had been worked out by his predecessor, C Subramaniam, and urged the state governments to make a success of it.
