Acme of Poor Performance

Acme of Poor Performance Hansavivek NATIONAL NEWSPRINT AND PAPER (NEPA MILLS) has wiped out the entire loss brought forward from the previous year. This has been possible with higher production and increases in selling prices of newsprint. Output of newsprint increased from 40,770 tonnes to 48,071 tonnes, of caustic soda from 2,839 tonnes to 3,258 tonnes, and of chlorine from 2,521 tonnes to 2,890 tonnes. 'the installed and licensed capacities, however, were much higher at 07,500 tonnes and 75,000 tonnes, respectively, of newsprint; 4,025 tonnes and 8,928 tonnes of caustic soda; and 3,572 tonnes and 7,910 tonnes of chlorine. Selling price of newsprint was revised, from October 1973, from Rs 1,362 to Rs 1,500 per tonne upto the level of previous year's despatches (36,550 tonnes) and to Rs 1,800 per tonne on supplies over and above that qvantum Notes appended to accounts reveal that the two-tier Selling price could not be given retrospective effect from April 1, 1973, and that the suggestion of a single pool price to be effective from October 1, 1973, is still under consideration of the Government of India. Meanwhile, the company has hilled customers provisionally at different rates, subject to the final decision of government. In the event of government not agreeing to the provisional price charged, the company will have to refund certain amounts. As per the original government order, such refundable amount is estimated at Rs 29 lakhs; and as per a subsequent clarification by government, it is estimated to be Rs 45 lakhs. On the other hand, if the formula submitted by the company is accepted, an additional amount over the provisional price billed to customers, estimated at Rs 11 lakhs, would be recoverable. The profit and loss account for 1973-74 is, therefor, subject to alterations consequent on the government finally fixing the selling price, In themeantime, the selling price has been further revised to Rs 2,300 per tonne from September
