Ironically, what the operations against the smugglers have brought out is the influence that these persons enjoy in the highest political and police quarters. Thus, there has been the case of a non-bailable warrrant of arrest issued against one of them being mysteriously transformed into a bailable warrant and the person concerned being promptly released on bail. There is the other alleged .smuggler who was arrested in Surat and released by the Baroda police on no more than a personal bond. Or, again, there is the case of the one who has so far, MISA notwithstanding, evaded being removed to jail or even to a government hospital on grounds of delicate health. After much cogitation, police officials are said to have decided against moving him to jail for fear that he might not be able to withstand the strain of the journey. It may be recalled that no such consideration was shown to the CPI(ML) leader, Chain Mazumdar, a known heart patient, who was allowed to die in police custody not to mention the scores of cases in which so-called 'Naxalite' suspects and detenus have been deliberately left to bleed to death from injuries inflicted by the police.
