Price Increase to the Rescue

Price Increase to the Rescue Hansavivek TATA IRON AND STEEL COMPANY has received Nippon Steel's report on expansion of capacity. The proposal is for construction of new capacity for producing three million tonnes of steel to be rolled into about 2,5 million tonnes of flat products. This would be 50 per cent larger than the originally contemplated expansion and would bring TISCO's capacity to about 5 million tonnes, or 2.5 times the present capacity. The cost, including that of development of ore mines and collieries, power generating capacity and a large raw-material bedding and blending yard at Jamshedpur, is estimated at Rs 1,800 crores. The project, which will take some four years to complete, is far too big for the company to tackle alone and it is felt that government and institutional finance would have to bear the major part, if not the whole, of the burden. Meanwhile, TISCO is concentrating its efforts on maintaining the present works at the highest possible level of efficiency. Steps are being taken to strengthen the engineering organisation, including its design capabilities, and to add to its ability to manufacture scarce replacement items of plant and equipment.
