Small Savings-For the Non-Small Saver

THE Ministry of Finance is said to be considering steps to make small savings more attractive in the face of the steady erosion of the value of the rupee with a view to ensuring that the Fifth Plan target of small savings of Rs 1,850 crores is reached. The Ministry is, at the same time, concerned about artificial inflation of small savings collections through diversion of savings with financial institutions like co-operative and commercial hanks. One of the northern states, for instance, is supposed to have shown a sizeable increase in small savings in 1973-74 by transferring funds from its co-operative banks.
