Teachers Pay IN univiersities and colleges across the country; teachers are agog at the an- nouncement of the new salary scales for them which are to be immediately effective in the Centrally administered universities and their colleges and in the IEFs. The teachers have unreservedly shown their joy even though the Union Education Minister's statement maintains an enigmatic silence on what is to happen to dearness and other allowances once the new scales begin to operate. If the rate of inflation is maintained at 25 to 30 per cent per annum, much of this new accrual will lie quickly eaten into. Their present euphoria moreover, would considerably postpone the time when college and university teachers would consider mobilising; their forces to mount another offensive for getting their wages im- fnuved.
