Since Tagore, there; has been no greater talent in Bengali literature. Others have written better poetry. Manik Bandyopadhyay was a noble writer of fiction, a natural genius, who composed what is perhaps the greatest novel in the language. Yet others have written essays which, in depth and purposiveness, possibly surpass most of Buddhadeva Bose's efforts. There are others too, whose imcisiveness in literary criticism may have outstripped Buddhadeva Bose's. And certainly, in this neighbourhood, there have been more competent playwrights. If you consider all aspects together, however, and also take into account his magnificent role as editor and catalyst of literary urges, his position is non pareil. Nevertheless, in the system of which we are all prisoners, he was denied decent minimum wages.
