BANGLADESH- On Election Eve

On Election Eve (From a Special Correspondent) EXPECT the Ministers of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to deny it, but the fact is that the Bangladesh Government some time ago placed orders for around three lakh tonnes of rice from Pakistan, despite the official Dacca ban on trading between the two countries. Agents in the United States and intermediaries among the Bengalis living in London arranged for the coarse grain grown in Sind to be supplied to hungry Bangladesh. This Pakistani-grown rice will go a little way to assuage the appetite of the people in the weeks preceding the first general elections of Bangladesh scheduled to take place on March 7. Sheikh Mujib and his colleagues in the ruling Awami League could not afford any .signs of breakdown in the supply of foodgrains before going to the polls.
