A fresh recruit to the Statesman was intimidated and manhandled by the Sadar Bazar police station staff one evening when he called to enquire about a case; the sub-inspector even threatened to put him in the lock-up if he did not quit. The reporter decided to sit- in through the night in the police station when the police officer refused to allow him telephone contact with a senior officer. The officer on duty at the Paharganj police station had similarly misbehaved with three local newsmen about two months earlier.
