Milk Schemes- Draining the Villages
January 20, 1973 to be an indicator of overall disenchantment of the masses with Sheikh Muji- bur Rehman. Restraint was thrown overboard, the drama was enacted of withdrawing the life membership presented to the Sheikh last year by the Dacca University Central Students' Union, and the Sheikh's pictures were burned at one or two places. Whatever the state of discontent over rising prices and the corruption indulged in by Awa- mi League functionaries, this was sacrilege. The roughnecks of the League pounced upon the opportunity, and the past fortnight has witnessed a systematic decimation, in the manner of West Bengal, of opposition citadels, particularly of those belonging to the Muzaffar and CPB elements. The March election, the Awami League stalwarts must be gloatingly calculating, is now safely in the bag: avenge-the-insult-to-the-father- of-the nation is as catchy a slogan as one could manufacture at such short notice in the present difficult economic situation, and the party ought to be grateful to those who have gifted them the occasion.
