ECAFE- Waiting for the Chinese

headquarters in the Sala Santhitham qttarter of Bangkok, everyone is keyed up over two impending developments. China has decided to participate in the ECAFE's activities and will soon bo sending its representatives to take up residence in Bangkok. China will make its debut at the annual ECAFE ministerial conference to be held in Tokyo in April. Now that Japan has already opened its embassy in Peking, China will have no problems sending a top-level delegation to the Tokyo meeting. The other impending development is the retirement of Burma's U Nyun as the Secretary - General. J H P Maramis of Indonesia will succeed him in June. It is quite likely that when Maramis takes over, the ECAFE bureaucracy is likely to find itself confused by the changes that are bound to occur with China's debut and will be marking time.
