Soviet Union Accent on Consumption

IN the Ninth Five-Year Plan (1971-75)national income of the Soviet Union is to go up by 39 per cent, 2 percentage points less than the growth in the Eighth Plan. In absolute terms the national in-come will go up from 2,66,000 mn roubles in 1970 to 3,69,000 mn roubles in 1975. This increase would be as large as that in the nine years from 1961 to I960, According to a Soviet economist, Allakhverdyan, in the course of 20 years from 1951 to 1970, the na-tional income of the USSR increased by 5.3 times while that of the USA rose by 2 times, England 1.6 times, France 2.6 times and West Germany 3.3 times.
