However, the detailed study ends in 1957 for lack of available information and the final chapter presents a set of optimistic spe culations on the course of events since 1958 ' that ignore Howe's earlier warnings to avoid the temptation of accepting policy statements and administrative measures as parts of a coherent plan. The question of what has happened to employment in China since 1958 is not answered in this book.
