India-Pakistan Detente? Romesh Thapar WHATEVER the repercussions of the Simla Summit, it has served to underline the need for sustained and perspective thinking on the future of our subcontinent. Too long have we assumed the inevitability of collision, conflict and confusion. Too long have we refused to assess the grave damage such strains and tensions cause to our common interests. Slowly, a new consciousness is beginning to percolate into the thinking of policy-makers in Delhi, Dacca and Islamabad. It remains to be seen whether the summitry now engaged upon will make possible the breakthrough to understanding and friendship.
