Rural Indebtedness

ACCORDING to a survey done by Syndicate Bank in Cuddapah district of Andhra Pradesh, private financiers continue to dominate in the field of rural finance. In the village of Duvvur (largely wet cultivation) moneylenders provide 56 per cent of the total credit, whereas in Vontimitta (mostly dry cultivation) their share is 12.5 per cent. Co-operative credit accounts for 12 per cent of the total in Duvvur and 27 per cent in the other village.
