Affairs disclosed In reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha the other day that up to the end of April this year 4,666 prisons had been detained under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act, The Act came into force on July 2, 1971, replacing the Maintenance of Internal Security Ordinance promulgated- two months earlier. It empowers the Central and state governments to detain without trial or recourse to the normal legal processes any person with a view to preventing him from acting in a manner prejudicial to the security of the country. The maximum period for which a person may be detained is 12 months, but the period can he stretched indefinitely by the government issuing fresh detention orders..
