attempt to evolve a new model of economic and social growth, based on a policy line which impacts not the ambitions of the middle-classes but the life and hopes of the mass of our people? To imagine that the state elections can be won without tackling the bankruptcy of our economic and social perspectives is to invite regional upsets of an embarrassing kind. The landslide which characterised the parliamentary elections may not necessarily reflect in the elections to the state assemblies, whatever the imapct of the recently concluded war. Our people will want proof that the new Congress is not returning to the ways of the old Congress In the coming months, it is going to be interesting to watch the process of turning inwards, if only to assess whether we have really matured as a democratic electorate able to distinguish between the various challenges facing us. Fortunately, we will be able to do this in newspapers cut to 10 pages and purged, we hope, of their wiffle waffle and verbiage.
