processes in many other parts of India. Perhaps herein lies one of the ways of exploring fruitfully the problem of "unity in diversity". (Incidentally, why not also "diversity in unity"? I am not being frivolous when I suggest this as I hope to write briefly on this topic in the near future.) Micro-studies offer an area in which sociologists/social anthropologists and historians can fruitfully co-operate. There is a great need for salvaging documents lying with villageand casteheadmen, and in temples and monasteries and taluk offices. It is a task to which the newly-constituted Indian Council of Historical Research may consider giving priority.
