NEW DELHI-Fiscal Make-Believe

INDIA TOBACCO has pledged that the participation of the Indian shareholder in its business would be increased as soon as possible. The board has been investigating the opportunities available for diversification in India, particularly in fields which should produce greater foreign exchange earnings or are in the essential areas of development notified by Government. The company's present financial resources are fully employed in the cigarette and packaging activities of the business. Until the possibilities for diversification have been fully explored, and a decision is made, the board does not consider it advisable to make any change in the capital structure by way of capitalisation of reserves, etc. The board assures shareholders that the possibility of this is always in its mind, but the first priority has to be given to the company's ability to continue to service the existing capital by an adequate dividend.
