The Indo-Soviet Compact Romesh Thapar EXACTLY 30 years after the raising of the historic "Quit India" demand, almost 20 years after the US-Pakistan military pact which brought the cold war to us, some 10 years after the failure of the "Hindi-Chini Bhai Bhai" cry, despite our Centrist commitments, our mixed economy, our democratic pretensions, and a quarter of a century of active work against pacts and alliances, we have moved into a compact with the Soviet Union, a compact which is bound to have the effect of polarising the subcontinent between the super powers.
