bonus issue lent support to earlier reports that the Government had decided to follow a tight policy in respect of bonus issues; Century's plea that it had applied for the bonus issue before the new guidelines came into force has not found favour with the Government. The cotton mill industry talked of a block closure to tide over the cotton shortage. There were reports of drug prices being slashed further. Central finances were reported to be in bad shape and fears were expressed that the budget deficit in the current year might rise to Rs 250 crores against Rs 90 crores last year. Reports from West Bengal indicated steady deterioration in the law and order situation. Industrial unrest continues to be on the increase and the jute industry is threatened with an indefinite strike.
