cities. Gauhati is the only urban centre in Assam, and it still gives the Impression of an over-grown village. Despite B C Roy's attempts to develop alternative urban centres like Durgapur, Asansol and Burdwari, Calcutta remains the natural destination for the Bengali migrant. In Maharashtra, Bombay has continued to grow, but without any impact, till recently, on development processes in the hinterland.
