cotton by 10 to 15 per cent through various measures. Some sort of self- discipline is essential if the industry is to avoid Government intervention, If supply cannot be augmented through import of cotton and/or staple fibre, some effective restraints will have to be placed on demand in order to achieve a better balance between demand and supply. It is good to hear that Government has issued quota letters for 62,500 bales of US cotton and that the balance quotas for global cotton are being released shortly. Efforts are also being made to secure the release of the balance quantity of US cotton under PL 480. Now that all outstanding issues have been settled, it is to be hoped that the trade will extend its fullest co-operation in expediting the import of cotton in order to ease the pressure on indigenous cotton.
