Obsolescence to Order?
GOVERNMENT OF INDIA has decided to set up a public sector unit capable of manufacturing 50,000 to 1,00,000 scooters annually with foreign collaboration because no indigenously developed design of a scooter was readily available. A new plant, it is said, is proposed to be set up because existing units in the private sector have been turning out obsolete models of scooters. Expansion of the production capacity of the scooter industry is likely to be welcomed by most people though its inclusion into the public sector may not be as welcome to the private sector. What, however, baffles one are the arguments advanced for foreign collaboration in the project.
