The Election behind the Crisis Romesh Thapar THESE days, subjected to the expensive advertising of Kim Il-Sung's intellectually, the box-wallah ballyhoo of Hindustan Steel's attempt to bluff the public through the purchased columns of newspapers, the publicising of the factional battles of groups of shareholders in private sector companies notorious for their speculative base, the increasingly sharp battles of the tobacco tycoons and the competition in subliminal sex which now intrudes in the selling of underpants, pyjama suits, trousers, shirts and bed sheets, the Indian elite seems to be living in a fancy world of its own. Little notice is being taken of the maturing economic-political crisis.
