(Contributed) IN attempting to evaluate the performance of the Indian banking system since the nationalisation of the 14 major com- mercial banks, both the principal argument and its rebuttal seem obvious, The argument would be that the single year that has elapsed since the historic event is too brief a period for the effects of such a broad-spectrum action to begin to show. The rebuttal would of course be that this is a weak alibi for inaction. As is common in all cliche-ridden situations, both points have their validity. Statistics can be provided to illustrate the commendable progress already achieved
