And they do not have royal divinity (though Sirik Matak is a prince) with which to claim the god-king status Sihanouk enjoyed. It was perhaps a clever play to make up for these deficiencies by arousing tribal passions; chauvinism seems to give cheap mass appeal to many ruling groups in Asia today.
