The Enlightened and the Cramped

The Enlightened and the Cramped A K Essack WHITE South Africa goes to the polls this month. The major issues in the elections will be basically the same as it was in 1910, namely, how to frustrate and stunt the development of the mass of the voteless and rightless Africans, Coloureds and Indians. The four parties wooing the white voters are Nationalist Party of Balthazaar Vorster, Hersigte Nationalist Party of Albert Hertzog; United Party of De Villiers Graaf, and Progressive Party backed by South Africa's leading mining magnate, Harry Oppenheimer. The former two derive their voting strength from the Afrikaans-speaking section of the white population, while the latter two are supported by English-speaking whites.
