JUST a few years ago, the valley of Nepal had only one outlet, to the south, into India. Nepalese gentry would go travelling and shopping to the Indian cities of Calcutta, Varanasi, Patna or Lucknow, while the more ordinary Nepalese would visit the small border towns such as Motihari, Dar-bhanga, Muzaffarpur and Tanakpur. This is no longer so. Kathmandu now has ties with almost every important capital in the world.
