Yawn or Gap

THE study group of the National Credit Council which was appointed in October 1968 under the chairmanship of D R Gadgil to suggest "an appropriate organisational framework for the implementation of . social objectives" has sought to identify the major territorial and functional gaps in institutional credit. The essay has scarcely proceeded beyond collation of materials from the "Statistical Tables Relating to Banks, 1967" and some case studies, though a few stray thoughts have also emerged on the integration of co-opera live and commercial banking systems. This was perhaps to be expected because, first, the "social objectives" were not spelt out, second, nationalisation of 14 major commercial banks intervened and third, fundamental rethinking on the future structure of banking is supposed to lie in the Banking Commission's province.
