October and November quotations for groundnut oil are mentioned around Rs 4,200 and Rs 3,600 per tonne respectively. Vanaspati prices have been kept unchanged for another fortnight but the allocation of soyabean oil has been reduced by some four per cent. New Delhi will be well advised to do away with the fortnightly revision of vanaspati prices which only encourages avoidable speculative activity. Hedge trading in groundnut oil, fix- ing of vanaspati prices on a quarterly basis and regulated supply of soyabean oil will go a long way in imparting a measure of price stability within the overall demand and supply position.
